Aug. 28- *NEW* Sunday P.M. SHINE Bible Study

…Shine like stars in the universe as you hold out the word of life.”
Philippians 2:15b-16 (NIV, 1984)

Dear Parents,

I am so excited that our youth group is launching into a new six-week video series called Shine…Sharing the Light of the World!

In the busyness of life—school, fun, friends, sports and more—our students sometimes lose sight of the truth that they have the message of hope and life that others urgently need. Yet when you stop and really think about it, sharing Jesus’ message with others is the most impacting thing they will ever do with their lives. Because the gospel can change someone’s life at the deepest level—both now and for all eternity. And nothing your teenager could ever offer others could be more powerful and permanent than that!

Learning how to relationally share the message of the gospel is a mysterious, Holy Spirit-inspired mix of prayer, God-infused spiritual power, practical skills and relational sensitivity. It is not a simple three-step formula or a canned presentation—it is a conversation about Jesus, or in many cases, a series of ongoing conversations. Yet there are some very practical skills that your teenager needs if he or she is going to confidently step out and share the gospel with friends. Our Shine series is designed to provide your student with those skills. Together, we’ll be learning how to navigate a gospel conversation from “takeoff to touchdown.”

What can you do to help your teenager get the most out of this series?

  • Pray! Pray! Pray! Shine includes several practical applications that will challenge our students to share the light of Jesus with others. Please pray for our students’ as they share their faith with their friends!
  • Engage in Conversations. This week’s episode is called “Facing Our Fears.” We’ll look at 1 Peter 2:9 and 2 Corinthians 4:6-7, and talk about why sharing our faith with our friends can sometimes feel intimidating. As you talk with your teenager this week consider asking them…
  • What’s your own biggest fear when it comes to sharing your faith?
  • How does God help us overcome our fear?
  • How can I pray for you?

Please watch for web updates from me during this six-week series. I’ll be providing you with several quick overviews of what we’re discussing in group. I encourage you to connect with your student about what he or she is learning each week.

May we all let the light of Jesus shine through us as we hold out the word of life to others!

The Torah Series- Numbers. ROAD TRIP! Numbers (though most would accuse it of being pretty boring, too) is a mix of all your favorite summer blockbusters. It contains the cliche road trip with plenty of shenanigans; it has action; it has mind-blowing supernatural, sci-fi stuff going on. It contains a healthy dose of personal drama for those of you into that sort of thing. It’s all there, waiting to teach us the history of God’s people- our history, and it shows us the stubborn and loving faithfulness of God. Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).

This video does not have an accompanying Bible study, but don’t worry! In a few weeks, we’ll dig even deeper into the books of the Bible and break each one down chapter by chapter. Oh, yeah! This is gonna’ be good!

May 30
The Torah Series- Leviticus. I get it. You probably think Leviticus is the most boring book of the Bible. So. Many. Rules. God has his reasons for each rule, but the main idea behind giving His people so many specific laws is WAY more beautiful than you know! Let’s learn to love the Law. Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).

The Torah Series- Exodus Part 2. In the first 15 chapters of Exodus, God miraculously rescues His people from slavery and oppression in Egypt. The rest of Exodus and the following books tell us about something even more incredible and amazing: God, the creator of the universe, wants to dwell with his people and restore access to his presence once more! Can you wrap your mind around that mystery? Do you understand what it means? Once again, God proves faithful to sinful people (like you and me) and prepares our hearts for Jesus. Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).

The Torah Series- Exodus Part 1. In the first 15 chapters of Genesis, we find the descendants of Abraham enslaved by Egypt. God appoints a man to point His people and all of Egypt to the one true God. In an epic battle of Good versus Evil, God shows his power and his heart in surprising ways- and guess what? It, too, points straight to Jesus and, in turn, points straight to me and you. It’s the incredible second act of the greatest story ever told! Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).

The Torah Series- Genesis Part 2. In the first 11 chapters of Genesis, we see how humanity’s rebellion against God changes a good creation into to something very, very bad. God shows us more mercy than we deserve, but everything looks hopeless for us. That’s when chapter 12 changes everything. God does something wild and new. It points straight to Jesus and, in turn, points straight to me and you. It’s the beginning of the greatest story ever told! Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).

April (what a crazy month for your youth minister! It’s time for new “beginnings”.)
The Torah Series- Genesis Part 1. From page one of the Bible, we see a loving and creative God’s desire to begin a relationship with us. In the first 11 chapters of Genesis, we are given illustrations of how far mankind has fallen away from God, but we also see how God always responds with more kindness and mercy than we really deserve. These beautiful, painful stories begin to answer the greatest questions of all time: What or who is our Creator? What is our relationship with him? Let’s find these answers together in Genesis. Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).

Covenant. In the Bible, man’s relationship with God is frequently defined as a covenant. What does that mean? What does this covenant say about God and our response to him? Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).

THE GOOD NEWS- Every Sunday, and especially on Easter, Christians make a personal and political statement by celebrating Jesus Christ as their king. How is Jesus unlike any king we usually imagine? How is his kingdom different from what we see in the world around us? The answer is good news! Let’s talk about that and challenge ourselves to share the Good News of our King Jesus. Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and on Easter Sunday morning during two worship services (9AM or 1045AM). There will be no Sunday school classes on Easter Sunday and no evening service.

Jesus- the MESSIAH. Why is Jesus called the “Messiah” (Hebrew), or the “Christ” (Greek)? It literally means that he is anointed- uniquely marked by God to be in a position above others for a specific purpose. Okay. So, what’s the purpose? I’m glad you asked! The entire Bible tells this story of the Messiah from the first book to the last. Through this study, we can learn why it’s so important for us to know what the Messiah has done and why the best decision we could ever make is to follow him. Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).

HOLINESS. This week’s Bible study is centered on the idea of God’s holiness. How do we understand it? What is God wanting to do with us through his holiness? Check out this video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).

HEAVEN+EARTH. Here is the first video of our new Bible Study format. It does a better job than I ever could of illustrating what the purpose and goal of the Christ-following life is all about: It is a reestablished relationship between God and man, where we experience the presence of Jesus in every moment and rebuild Heaven on Earth. Let’s do this! Check out the video and be ready to discuss it with FBC Burnet Student Ministry on Wednesday night (6-7PM) and Sunday morning (930-1030AM).
